Altered Playing Cards 2s and Aces of 4 Suits with Hand Colored Stenciled Designs.

Hi friends! Dana here today sharing a full set of altered playing cards that I created for a collaboration with Tina Walker and a group of amazingly talented artists. I was excited to participate in this challenge because I have never altered a deck of cards. I decided to use chipboard playing cards as the base for my artwork. Nicolle’s Clubs, Spades, Diamonds, and Hearts Cards designs were perfect for this project! I prefer the matte finish and strength of chipboard over the material of a traditional deck of cards. The cut-out suit and number designs on the cards are unique and something that really caught my eye and added an element of fun.

Here’s the full set of cards. I chose art deco inspired stencil designs for the back of my cards and stencils with large, easily recognizable designs for the front. I decorated each suit separately for variety, using a different color palette for each. Once I had the prints transferred to the cards, I felt like I was filling in an adult coloring page, which was really relaxing. I may use these cards in some way in a future project, but for now, I’m enjoying them as they are.

Altered Chipboard Playing Cards Clubs with Hand Colored Stenciled Art Deco and Alchemy Designs

For the club cards, I used an art deco sunburst stencil on the back side of each card and an evil seeing eye for the front of each card. I applied gold spray paint over the sunburst stencil on the back of the cards and then used paint markers to color in the rest of the design. For the front of each card, I applied black dye ink over the eye stencil, and then colored in the rest of the design with paint markers.

For the spade cards, I used an art deco summit stencil on the back side of each card and an alchemy sun for the front of each card. I applied gold spray paint over the summit stencil on the back of the cards and then used paint markers to color in the rest of the design. For the front of each card, I applied black dye ink over the sun stencil, and then colored in the rest of the design with paint markers.

For the diamond cards, I used an art deco Chicago stencil on the back side of each card and an alchemy crowned skull for the front of each card. I applied gold spray paint over the Chicago stencil on the back of the cards and then used paint markers to color in the rest of the design. For the front of each card, I applied black dye ink over the skull stencil, and then colored in the rest of the design with paint markers.
